Lombok Island, Indonesia Set to Host International Bamboo Architecture Festival

Indonesia, Aug 3, 2013 - (ACN Newswire) - Lombok is set to host the "Lombok International Bamboo Architecture Festival", organized by the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI) and Budi Pradono Architects, on December 11-14, 2013 at Senggigi Beach, Lombok.

The festival will display 50 architectural installations, with bamboo as the primary material. The installations comprise works by 50 groups from different countries. These work of art are among the best as chosen by a team of curators including Budi Pradono, Jay Subiakto, Asmudjo Jono Irianto, and Christoph Tonges (CONBAM - Advanced Bamboo Application, Germany).

At a press conference in Jakarta to launch to 2013 event, Chief of the Association of Indonesian Architects - Nusa Tenggara Barat (IAI NTB), Rahman Wibisono, IAI, said, "The Festival's theme of 'Re-Design the World with Bamboo' is aimed at developing the creative economy on Lombok Island through architectural designs which utilize and promote the value of local materials while maintaining a sustainable environment."

Chief of the Association of Indonesian Architects, Asfarinal, IAI, added that the event, initiated by IAI NTB, should set the standard for the development of the creative economy and will accommodate architects in exploring and presenting regionally-driven architectural works. The Indonesian Institute of Architects' support of the event may be taken as reference for 33 other IAI regional boards.

Budi Pradono, IAI, as the coordinator of the curator's team said, "This festival will be a starting point for bamboo exploration and the latest expressions of installation art will provide new colors to Senggigi Beach, Lombok". Adding to the value of this festival, prominent architects have been specially invited to exhibit their works of bamboo, including Takeru Shoji (Jepang), Pitupong Chaowakul (Thailand), Vo Trong Ngahia (Vietnam), Dirk E. Hebel (ETH Zurich, Singapore), Eko Prawoto (Indonesia).

Dr. H. Zaini Arony, M.Pd., Head of Lombok Barat District, said that Lombok Barat, as host, is particularly interested in this event since it will provide value addition to the economy, and lend further attraction to the region which has been the center of tourism in Nusa Tenggara Barat. He has set a target of two million tourists visiting the region in 2015. "This event will further acknowledge Lombok Barat District as the center of NTB tourism by promoting the appreciation of bamboo and utilizing bamboo material as indigenous knowledge, without having to neglect preservation of the environment. The development of the design-based creative economy is going to offer a significant contribution to the people of Lombok, and tourism in Indonesia," he added.

Yuwono Imanto, Marketing Director of Propan Raya, a well known Indonesian paint company, will support the event by launching quality product Bambookote, an environmentally friendly water-based paint specially formulated as the base layer (adhesion promoter) on the surface of bamboo bark. This product is created in response to demand from bamboo lovers, providing additional value and protection for bamboo elements, in both interior and exterior application.

Harry Waluyo, Director General of Design, Science & Technology, Desain & IPTEK, Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, explained, "As one of 15 creative industries that will be administered by the government, the architecture subsector is part of the creative economy based on Media, Design, and Science & Technology (MDI). Temporary figures in 2012 show that the contribution of the architecture subsector to the creative industry is 4.2% and worth Rp 19.9 trillion".

"The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy hopes this event may contribute positively to the improvement of innovative designs in Indonesia, both qualitatively and quantitatively, increased designers' capacity, better appreciation from the stakeholders and the society, as well as improvement in economic values through commercialization and social values due to the multiplier effect," Harry Waluyo added.

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy supports and invites all stakeholders in the tourism and creative economy sector, including the government, state-owned enterprises, and national privates, to participate in ensuring this event's success.

The series of events of the festival start with a dinner party with the Head of Lombok Barat District at Taman Narmada on December 1, 2013. This is followed the next day by a Seminar at Sentosa Hotel, Senggigi, featuring speakers that include Prof. Dr. Elizabeth A Wijaya, Expert in Bamboo Taxonomy from Indonesian Institute of Sciences - LIPI, Budi Pradono, IAI, Professional Architect, Curator, Yori Antar, IAI, Professional Architect and Dirk E. Hebel, Assistant Professor of Architecture and Construction ETH Zurich/FCL Singapore.

Workshop classes are scheduled on December 3-5, 2013 with Budi Pradono, IAI, Pon Sapriamulya Purajatnika, IAI, Pathurahman, ST, MT, Drs. Asmudjo Jono Irianto, M.Sn., Yoka Sara, Purwito, Dipl.E.Eng as speakers, and participants from various circles including professional as well as architecture and landscape architecture students, contractors, developers, and general public.

For the duration of the festival, 50 groups of participants build their works of bamboo, mainly located on the sands of Senggigi Beach.

The main event itself will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2013, attended by the Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Development, the Indonesian Minister of Public Works, the Governor of Nusa Tenggara Barat, the Head of Districts & Municipalities throughout Nusa Tenggara Barat Province, the Chief of the Association of Indonesian Architects, and Heads of Architecture Department/Major from all over Indonesia.
