SINGAPORE, Mar 14, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - Precision Engineering (PE) companies that embrace Sustainable Manufacturing sooner rather than later will gain a competitive advantage and be rewarded with new business opportunities. This is according to Dr. Song Bin, Director of the Sustainable Manufacturing Centre at the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech). Global product manufacturers are setting eco-targets and have started to include eco-indicators as part of their supplier selection criteria. At present, PE companies are encouraged to measure and disclose their eco-performance but this will likely become a requirement very soon.
Sustainable Manufacturing is just one of the many topics that will be presented at the Precision Engineering Business Forum 2011, which returns for another edition this year from 24 - 25 March at the Singapore Expo. Held alongside MTA2011 - the leading trade exhibition for the precision engineering industries in Southeast Asia - the Precision Engineering Business Forum 2011 is the only conference of its kind in the region, and will be attended by key Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), top tier contract manufacturers, leading researchers and industry practitioners.
The event is jointly organised by Singapore Exhibition Services (SES) and SIMTech. This year, the forum features topics along focused tracks for the strategic growth sectors of Aerospace, Medical Technology, Oil & Gas and Surface Finishing. Lindy Wee, Director of PR & Conferences at SES says, "The Precision Engineering Business Forum provides industry professionals with a knowledge-sharing platform for discussing the latest developments and pertinent business and technology issues today. With a list of prominent speakers and delegates, the forum also offers opportunities to meet strategic partners and explore business deals."
At the Precision Engineering Business Forum 2011, Dr. Song will share with participants the Sustainable Manufacturing Centre's (SMC) efforts to assist the manufacturing industry in embracing sustainability through technology innovation, implementation and services. One focus area is Remanufacturing. Remanufacturing replaces parts subjected to degradation but retains most of the value of original parts and products. The process represents significant savings in energy, water and materials. With the remanufactured machines matching performance expectations of new machines, this process presents rich opportunities for high value-add services by PE companies. As an emerging trend, PE companies also have the opportunity to become remanufacturers either by themselves, or with partners and traders. SMC's strategy will be to help PE companies develop novel enabling technologies for an internationally competitive remanufacturing industry in Singapore.
Other areas that Dr. Song will share insights on are Carbon Footprint Assessment and Reduction Planning, and Green Packaging. These initiatives help companies understand their eco-performances and establish green strategies, and develop innovative technologies in the green packaging industry.
"Many companies are not aware of the impact of Sustainable Manufacturing yet. This means that there are windows of opportunities for differentiation and competitive advantages. At SIMTech, we are actively developing enabling and new technologies that allow PE companies to reduce energy consumption, save materials, and increase value-add," says Dr. Song.
Aside from SIMTech, the forum boasts an unrivalled panel of speakers including industry experts from Boeing, GE Healthcare, Rolls-Royce and Schlumberger who will introduce thought-provoking presentations and discussions over the two-day conference.
