Fujitsu Joins United Nations Global Compact

TOKYO, Dec 15, 2009 - (ACN Newswire) - Fujitsu today announced that it became a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact on December 9.

By upholding the Global Compact's ten principles in the four areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption, as well as actively implementing corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, Fujitsu is promoting responsible management as a global company while contributing to the building of a sustainable society.

About the United Nations Global Compact
The United Nations Global Compact was proposed by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the January 1999 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. In July 2000, the initiative was formally inaugurated at the UN headquarters in New York. As of December 2009, more than 7,000 businesses and other organizations from 134 countries were participating in the compact.

Participating companies voluntarily uphold ten principles in the four areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption. While seeking to promote the CSR activities of companies as part of their responsibility as corporate citizens, the compact endeavors through these activities to foster a sustainable and inclusive global economy, starting with the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals(1).

Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact
Human Rights
Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labor
Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;
Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labor; and
Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment
Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-Corruption

Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
