SINGAPORE, July 29, 2010 - (ACN Newswire) - Crisis remains PR practitioners' greatest fear particularly since the spread of news is accelerated through social media. Workshops in Singapore and Hong Kong will tackle this issue directly.
Crisis communications' golden rule has never been more applicable - speed. Crisis communications can never be one-dimensional and it is vital for PR practitioners to understand all audiences and types of media (yes, including traditional) to have control over crises quickly.
It interesting to note how social media can "drive" traditional media, and vice versa, as well as its impact on the PR professional's weapon (or shield) of choice.
"Increasingly social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are becoming the eyes and ears of traditional media, strongly influencing the tone and content of conventional news reporting," highlights Graham Vink, Managing Director of Vink & Associates.
"From an earthquake in Haiti to an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the impact of social media has grown from incidental to enormous."
While social media has gained infamy in recent times as the harbinger of PR death, PR practitioners can reign in the uncertainty by pro-actively, not reactively, engaging both friends and enemies.
To do this, it is important to determine key audiences - viewers and readers of traditional newspapers and magazines, television, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and blogs. Media channels can then be decided on from there.
Vink does note, though, that regardless of the platform, effective crisis communications must be driven by messages - statements or responses that contain human, emotional components. Organisations must see the importance of incorporating key messages in all that is said and done, while using the right media for the appropriate messages.
Vink will be leading a "Crisis Management & Social Media" workshop on 27 - 28 September, and 30 September - 1 October in Hong Kong and Singapore respectively, to share pre-, present- and post-crisis mitigation strategies that utilise both social and traditional media.
