TOKYO, Sept 10, 2010 - (ACN Newswire) - Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces that Toyota Motor Corporation Australia Ltd. (TMCA), TMC's manufacturing and sales subsidiary in Australia, will produce a new-model gasoline engine at its Altona Plant from around 2012 and supply it to Toyota manufacturing plants in ASEAN countries for use in the "Camry" and "Camry Hybrid".
TMCA, established in 1959, began production in 1963 and surpassed 2 million vehicles of cumulative production in 2004. In 1996, it began exporting to the Middle East and, as a production and export base for the Middle East and Oceania, now exports approximately 70% of its vehicle production.
Adding Australia as a new supply base to the complimentary engine supply structure long developed among plants in ASEAN countries is meant to increase the efficiency and strength of TMC's production and supply structure in the Asia-Pacific region.
Toyota is committed to contributing to the Australian automobile industry and employment by striving for an evermore-appropriate production and supply structure in the Asia-Pacific region.
