Build Eco Xpo Asia 2012 sees stronger sector participation, signalling growing environmental consciousness |
SINGAPORE, Oct 10, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - Build Eco Xpo (BEX) Asia, Southeast Asia's premier event and exhibition for green building and construction industry, kicked off today at Singapore's Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre.
Ms Grace Fu, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, 2nd Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and 2nd Minister for Foreign Affairs, graced the official opening ceremony as the Guest-of-Honour.
The three-day regional event - an industry platform for networking opportunities, insight sharing, and business propositions - has returned this year. Some 282 companies from over 29 countries are participating in BEX Asia 2012, more than double since its inception five years ago. Its rapid growth shows the regional building and construction sector is becoming more eco-friendly, and is keen on adopting sustainable technologies, products and work practices.
The green building rush is also creating business opportunities. Last year, a total of 7,693 people from 37 countries - including 3,086 key executives and decision-makers - visited BEX Asia. A staggering US$81 million was generated in sales, up 11% from US$73 million in 2010. This year, BEX Asia is expecting more than 8,000 visitors and US$90 million in sales.
BEX Asia's outreach also extends beyond Singapore and Southeast Asia.
In 2011, the event witnessed the inking of a strategic collaboration promoting green building design, practices and technology in Singapore and Beijing. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Singapore Green Building Council, the Building & Construction Authority, JTC Corporation, HDB Building Research Institute, the Singapore Business Federation, and the Beijing Construction Decoration Association.
BEX Asia is also proud to have forged strategic partnerships with the Taiwan Plastics Industry Association and the Belgium-based KNX Association (a global certification for home and building controls).
This year, to up the ante, BEX Asia sees four regional pavilions including the new pavilion from Portugal. Ms Michelle Lim, Managing Director of Reed Exhibitions Singapore, which organises BEX Asia 2012, said: "As the premier business platform for the industry, we want to provide the opportunity for our participants to reach out to the region and beyond. It is imperative for us to be acutely aware of the industry's developments, understanding the current market trends and ensuring that these demands are met through strong programme line-up and an updated list of exhibitors."
BEX Asia 2012 also sees three new product categories in response to the increased demand. They are Green Interiors; Skyrise Landscaping; and Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) - reflecting growing interest in green equipment and practices indoors. Previously, the green movement in regional building and construction focused mostly on the macro and brick-and-mortar industry, but that is now changing, with more emphasis being placed on greening from within.
Other highlights of BEX Asia 2012 include FOCUS@BEX, a networking platform where exhibitors can introduce their products and technology via presentations in a seminar-like setting. Guest speakers from the region have also been invited to speak and share their expertise.
The line-up of guest speakers this year includes:
1. Ms Caroline Burns, Regional Leader, Asia, Geyer - a world-leading strategic design practice specialising in the development and implementation of pioneering interior solutions, Ms Burns will be speaking on designing sustainable workplaces
2. Professor Jason Pomeroy, Principal, Pomeroy Studio - award-winning architect and thought leader in the field of sustainable built environments, Prof Pomeroy will be speaking on distilling, designing and disseminating towards a sustainable future
3. Mr Gaurang Khemka, Founding Director, URBNarc - an architect with a specialisation in Urban Design, Master Planning and Resort Planning, Mr Khemka has over 15 years of experience. His conference topic is: Growth and Future of Cities: What Makes Them Liveable, Sustainable and Healthy
BEX Asia 2012 is also held in conjunction with the International Green Building Conference (IGBC) 2012, which sees key green building decision-makers worldwide gather to share their expertise and discuss issues pertinent to all across the environmental spectrum. These include managing green capital costs, the role of government leadership in green building development and policy formulation, ensuring energy efficiency in 24/7 business data centres, and innovative lighting solutions, among others.
Looking ahead, the green building industry can anticipate a more rewarding and insightful BEX Asia 2013, which will feature not just the IGBC but also the World's Engineer Summit (WES) 2013. WES 2013 will focus on innovative and sustainable solutions to climate change, and the convergence of both BEX and WES will allow participants from multi-discipline specialties to gather and share ideas and environmentally friendly practices for facing the challenges of climate change.
