Overwhelming response shows growing international interest in Malaysian power sector |
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20, 2014 - (ACN Newswire) - The recently concluded ASEAN Power Week, comprising of POWER-GEN Asia, Renewable Energy World Asia and the POWER-GEN Asia Financial Forum attracted close to 8,000 industry professionals from more than 70 countries, a clear indication that Malaysia continues to attract the attention of the international power generation industry players.
Apart from international industry heavy weights like Tenaga Nasional Berhad, which was also the Host Utility, Alstom, Siemens, Rolls Royce, Doosan Heavy Industries & Constructions, Hitachi Heavy Industries, Wartsila, GE and Kawasaki, the three day event which ended on 12 September also had the participation of key government agencies including Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA), Energy Commission of Malaysia, Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA), Malaysian Green Technology Corporation and Sarawak Corridor Development Authority (RECODA).
ASEAN Power Week organised by PennWell Corporation also saw a packed exhibit floor with over 200 exhibitors from around the world showcasing their latest technologies, products and solutions that will drive the industry forward.
In his key note address at the opening of ASEAN Power Week, Deputy Minister of KeTTHA, Dato' Seri DiRaja Mahdzir Khalid said the unique feature of the event is that it brings together such a wide range of power industry professionals from across the spectrum of the power industry.
He said that ASEAN Power Week was significant to Malaysia because as the need to collaborate and integrate all aspects of the industry increases, the opportunity for experts in the renewables sector to exchange views with counterparts in the coal and gas fired generation business is welcomed as the nation strives towards optimum energy mix.
Emphasising the strategic importance of ASEAN Power Week, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) Vice President (Generation), Zainudin Ibrahim who represented the President/CEO said, "As the largest electricity utility in Malaysia and a leading utility company in Asia, TNB values highly the opportunity to exchange views with colleagues and peers in the power industry and to share our experiences and challenges.
"If ever there was a need for the industry to collaborate and exchange views about how best to adapt to changing market conditions, it is now. Whether you are in the forefront of the renewable energy industry, a supplier of power island equipment or an operator of a conventional power fleet, there is a mutuality of interest to develop a modern power system that is both smart and sustainable.
"And it is events like ASEAN Power Week that play an important role in encouraging this exchange of information and nurturing that all-important collaboration."
ASEAN Power Week Event Director, Dr Heather Johnstone added, "The unprecedented level of international participation at ASEAN Power Week in Kuala Lumpur is mainly due to the fact that global power generation industry players are increasingly looking at Malaysia's growing power sector which is supported by a newly industrialized market economy and healthy economic growth.
"The strong economic growth in Malaysia and the region is driving demand for electricity and this situation opens up various possibilities for industry professionals and investors who saw ASEAN Power Week as a strategic platform for brand building and business development."
