30 Years Of Sparkle For Hong Kong at BASELWORLD
The HKTDC Organised More Than 150 Hong Kong Exhibitors

HONG KONG, Mar 26, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - Hong Kong is celebrating its 30th year at BASELWORLD 2015, now under way in Switzerland. The leading international watch and jewellery show brings together major brands from around the world each year. This year, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) organised 151 Hong Kong exhibitors to participate in the Hong Kong Pavilion, the largest international pavilion at the event. In addition, a Hong Kong original jewellery brand has become the first such brand to be stationed in the prestigious main hall of the fair.

30 Years Of Sparkle For Hong Kong at BASELWORLD

Hong Kong Pavilion

Since the opening of BASELWORLD 2015 on March 19, visitors have been flocking to the Hong Kong Pavilion which includes 83 jewelry brands, 49 watch & clock companies, nine watch parts and components companies and 10 packaging firms. The Hong Kong brands are showcasing novel designs and fine products, such as classic jewelry pieces and elegant and sporty watches.

Margaret Fong, Executive Director of the HKTDC, said, "After 30 years of participation, the Hong Kong Pavilion has raised the profile of Hong Kong brands among international buyers. Through this platform at BASELWORLD, Hong Kong companies can reach buyers from Europe and around the world to build new business partnerships."

Guinness World Record

Besides finding top brands at the Hong Kong Pavilion, international visitors can also enjoy the dazzling charm of Hong Kong jewelry at Hall 1 of the fair. Hong Kong original brand CORONET(R) made history by becoming the first Hong Kong and the second Asian jewellery brand, to be housed at Hall 1, a focal point of BASELWORLD. There was also a grand launch of "Eden of Coronet", the diamond-studded guitar that entered the Guinness World Record books as the most valuable guitar in the world. The guitar is designed by musician and designer Mark Lui, and is adorned with more than 400 carat diamonds set in 1.6kg of 18k gold, valued at approximately US$2 million.

New Business Opportunities

Europe and the Chinese mainland are the two major export markets for Hong Kong's watch and clock industry. Wu Ku-chuen, the Managing Director of Dominion Watch Co Ltd, said that the buyers' attitudes this year are more conservative compared to previous years. He believes that, with more technology brands participating in BASELWORLD, smart watches will be the focus of attention for buyers. Yip Siu-fan, Managing Director of Sun Tai Watch Co., Ltd. believes that, despite the unstable global economic outlook, participating in the fair allows them to contact buyers and exchange market information, which is very helpful to his company. "We're creating a unique brand image to win business opportunities through cost-effective upgrading," Mr Yip said. He believes that the rise of wearable technology will boost demand for watch parts.

Victor Chan, Managing Director of Continental Jewellery (Mfg) Ltd, remains optimistic about Hong Kong's watch and jewelry industry, "Hong Kong's watch and jewelry products keep up with world trends; they are reasonably priced and excellently designed," he said. Despite the relatively low exchange rate of the euro, he thinks European buyers will not lower their requirements for quality; they would rather reduce the purchase quantity. "We will continue to enrich the product line, and provide more choice for European buyers," he said. Jessica Kwan, Director of Universal Jewellery Design Centre Ltd., added that, in response to changing purchasing patterns of buyers, the company will increase its flexibility on production, to provide a more unique product to the customers.

Exports Rising

Hong Kong, as one of the most important exporters of watches, clocks and fine jewelry, exported US$10,298 million worth of watches in 2014, up 4.2 per cent year-on-year. The US, Switzerland and the Chinese mainland are the largest export markets for Hong Kong.

During the same period, exports of Hong Kong jewelry reached US$7,882 million, an increase of 8.4 per cent compared to 2013. In addition to the two main markets - the US and the European Union - Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and the ASEAN region are increasingly important markets for Hong Kong. Exports to these markets grew by 29 per cent, 155 per cent and 32 per cent respectively last year.

BASELWORLD

BASELWORLD is organised by the MCH Swiss Exhibition (Basel) Ltd., gathering the watches and jewelry, diamonds, gemstones, pearls and related machinery brands in one place. It attracts about 150,000 visitors to participate each year. The fair, featuring some 1,500 brands from 40 countries, ends later today.
