PERTH, W AUSTRALIA, Oct 26, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - Leading investor and public relations consultancy Purple Communications has been awarded the Public Relations Institute of Australia's (PRIA) Western Australian State Award for Excellence in Public Affairs for its work with Sinosteel Midwest Corporation.
Purple's award winning campaign helped successfully appeal a decision by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to knock back an essential part of Sinosteel Midwest's Koolanooka/Blue Hills project, south of Geraldton.
Purple implemented an intensive stakeholder relations campaign to garner community support and spur supporters into action. The public response was outstanding. Local government, industry bodies, indigenous groups, businesses, workers and residents submitted 144 appeals urging the Minister for the Environment to grant approval for the project.
The project was approved and, on 15 July 2010, Sinosteel Midwest Corporation celebrated its first shipment of ore - the first to be exported from Australia by a Chinese company.
Purple Communications Managing Director Warrick Hazeldine said that winning the award is a tremendous honour for the company.
"It is humbling to win such a prestigious award. Purple has a longstanding relationship with Sinosteel Midwest Corporation and we are proud of the work we have done with them. Our campaign was intensive, targeted and well managed and the result was significant for Sinosteel Midwest Corporation and the local community," Mr Hazeldine said.
"This award also reflects the importance of local knowledge when representing companies from China and the broader Asian market into Australia. Being part of the Public Relations Organisation International (PROI) network has now given us reach into Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore like never before."
Sinosteel Midwest Corporation Managing Director Tony Cheng said working with people with local expertise in developing resource projects in Western Australia has been integral to their operations.
"As a Chinese company we recognize that local knowledge and expertise is vital to developing projects in Western Australia, which is why we have invested in a team of local employees and consultants like Purple to drive us forward," Mr Cheng said.
Purple Communications is part of PROI, the world's largest independent network of public and investor relations organisations with 53 partner firms in 39 countries.
Purple Communications now moves on to the National PRIA Golden Target Awards which will be announced at a Gala Dinner in Sydney on the 24 and 25 October 2011.
