Survey reveals the increasing focus on overseas markets and rising domestic competition has pushed the majority of employers to seek multi-lingual, flexible personnel |
TOKYO, Aug 13, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - If employers want to recruit candidates with a global mindset in a bid to keep up with the global marketplace they need to think that way themselves, according to Hays Specialist Recruitment Japan KK ("Hays Japan").
A recent Hays Japan survey of hiring managers found 64 per cent of employers were looking for personnel with a global mindset as they were confronted with a more globalized marketplace. At the same time, 58 per cent said that they need these skills in order to effectively manage relationships between the Japan office and overseas partners, vendors and branch locations. Finally, 36 per cent said that a global mindset amongst staff is essential to the ability to remain competitive.
However, 82 per cent said that they find it extremely difficult or somewhat difficult to source the personnel that meet their needs. Yet, when asked what method they were using to train staff or develop a global mindset within their organization 52 per cent said they were doing "nothing in particular".
"Hiring processes in Japan are traditionally quite slow and lengthy. However, a great range of employers are focused on securing candidates with a global mindset at the moment, and if organizations want to secure the best talent, they need to move quickly or risk losing the individual to a competitor," says Japan-based Hays Operations Director, Asia, Christine Wright.
"Significant momentum backs Japan's outbound growth, and at the same time domestic competition is growing across many industries domestically in Japan. A talent squeeze has resulted, focused on skilled, experienced personnel with a global mindset."
According to Hays, candidates can take measures to develop their global mindset. "Candidates with business-level English are now highly regarded by employers. So it's important for candidates to brush up on your language skills or consider working abroad where you can not only improve your English language skills but learn about different cultures first-hand. This will also allow you to demonstrate to potential employers in Japan that you are flexible in your approach to work, which is another valuable trait employers are now searching for," said Christine.
The survey defined someone with a global mindset, in order of importance, as, 1. Possessing advanced foreign language skills (particularly English); 2. Interested in and able to adapt to different cultures; 3. Flexible and able to accommodate a difference of opinion.
Other findings of the Hays Japan survey:
- 82 per cent said that they find it extremely difficult or somewhat difficult to source and hire personnel with a global mindset. - 78 per cent said that the most important criteria is advanced communication skills, while 53 per cent noted business-level English. - 40 per cent said that they have hired foreign personnel to satisfy their need for a global mindset, while 21 per cent target those who have studied or worked abroad. - 32 per cent said that they have developed English training programs for current staff to address the need, while 28 per cent said that they have sent staff on overseas assignments to help them develop.
Hays conducted the survey of 250 HR and hiring managers in Japan from 20 to 26 June.
