Clive Landale, Managing Director, 90 West Asset Management Ltd, will be attending the marcus evans Private Wealth Management APAC Summit 2012. He discusses current opportunities for investors and how projects can be evaluated for maximum return. |
London, Oct 2, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - Agriculture, energy and mining are positioned to benefit from the continued urbanisation of emerging nations, however, in the current "China centric" market many are trading at large discounts to their net present value. This is presenting an incredible opportunity for investors, says Clive Landale, Managing Director, 90 West Asset Management Ltd.
From an asset management firm at the upcoming marcus evans Private Wealth Management APAC Summit 2012, in Macao, China, 29 - 31 October, Landale discusses the skills needed to appraise the quality of resources and evaluate investment projects.
- What upcoming opportunities can private wealth managers take advantage of and how?
The market believes that the super cycle in commodities is over, but there are many sectors within the asset class that are poised for strong growth.
Firstly, the Chinese economy is much larger today than it was five years ago. This is creating an absolute volume of demand which is large even without further increases in gross domestic product. But it is not just about China.
Growth in demand for fertiliser, for example, is much higher in Brazil and India. Potash companies are expanding despite the Chinese slowdown. This trend is set to intensify as emerging nations continue to require more food.
There are many ways to leverage this food trend. Asset managers can invest in downstream, midstream and upstream companies to ensure more access to service providers, agricultural assets as well as raw materials such as Potash. Investors should access a variety of companies, as pricing power can shift from one sector to another.
Energy is another natural resource that is poised for growth due to emerging market demand. The industry is being driven currently by new fracking technology in the US. A trend that could see it become a net exporter of energy over the next few years. This has created some incredible opportunities in a relatively low risk environment.
Again, investors can access this trend via service companies that are less exposed to commodity pricing shifts.
- How can wealth managers better control risk?
Quality is key to making money when investing in global natural resources. A company with quality assets will perform throughout the cycle, regardless.
Investors should think less about demand and focus on supply. Companies with top quality resources and good management will survive and prosper regardless of short term macro trends.
So, risk should be controlled by selecting only top quality companies.
W- hat skills are needed to evaluate natural resource projects?
The most important skills are experience and technical expertise. Physically seeing the assets from a mining, geological and a geographical perspective is an absolute priority. The volume of the project and the metallurgical recovery factors within the ore body are critical factors which require a high level of technical understanding. This is not just about Net Present Value (NPV) valuations, it is about understanding where nature has laid its pearls.
- How can global natural resource funds be measured?
The benchmark that we use is the Standard & Poor's (S&P) Global Natural Resources Index. This Index controls the market capital of large companies, which are split equally between energy, mining and agriculture. Each natural resource sector is then better represented and the opportunities for each can be specifically determined.
