Shams Rahman, Professor of Supply Chain Management, RMIT University, a speaker at the marcus evans Chief Logistics Officer Summit 2013, on having the right talent to manage complex supply chains. |
London, Oct 15, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - With highly complex supply chains today, Chief Logistics Officers (CLOs) have the task of ensuring all complex processes add value, said Shams Rahman, Professor of Supply Chain Management, RMIT University. "The key to doing that is in hiring and managing the right talent. That is the critical dimension," he went on to say.
A speaker at the upcoming marcus evans Chief Logistics Officer Summit 2013, on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, 17 - 19 February, Rahman offers his ideas on why investing in people within the organisation is critical in supply chain management.
- What do CLOs overlook that you consider critical in supply chain management?
Severe competitive pressures in recent years have forced firms to implement best practices, create strategic alliances with partners, and gain access to the best and latest technologies. However, to do these things efficiently and effectively requires skilled and competent human resources. Many CLOs overlook the human resources aspect, when they require skilled and competent people to run their supply chains.
- What are the complexities of the job today?
CLOs are operating in a global supply chain context, so they have to manage many different products and services, and many partners in different locations globally. This means they have to manage networks of relationships within the firm, with outside firms and between interdependent organisations; at the same time, they have to be efficient and responsive to customer demands in order to be competitive. To add to these many also have to manage return processes. All these make a supply chain complex. Nevertheless, all complex processes in the supply chain have to add value. The key to doing that is in recruiting and managing the right talent. That is the critical dimension of a contemporary supply chain.
- How should CLOs attract and develop talent?
It is important to highlight that a shortage of skilled logistics personnel is emerging. In the light of this, firms will face difficulties to find people with the right skills and abilities to fill supply chain management positions. On the one hand, CLOs need to recruit people who have the expertise to manage supply chain and logistics functions, such as inventory, transportation and warehousing, but they also need to understand how to build teams and be able to manage people through effective communication, perhaps in a multicultural environment.
Keeping or managing talent is another challenge. CLOs need to give them opportunities to progress in the organisation, to move up the ladder and take on tasks that are more challenging than what they currently deal with. Therefore, they must be given the right training at the right time.
- What should CLOs prepare their supply chains for?
The business environment is changing very rapidly, so CLOs should look into business opportunities by addressing current as well as future challenges. One such challenge is the green or sustainability issue. This means that CLOs have to consider KPIs from the triple bottom line perspective. The organisation has to make money, while considering the natural environment, and societal issues.
Addressing sustainability is not easy. However, there is no alternative. The win-win-win situation for the organisation, society and the environment can only be achieved through innovation and CLOs must prepare their supply chains accordingly.
