TOKYO, Nov 1, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - PwC will be the premier sponsor of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2012, which takes place from November 8-21st in Tokyo and will be hosted by IMPACT Foundation Japan.
As outlined in PwC's report, "Revitalising Corporate Japan: A Prescription for Growth," released in Tokyo in September, Japan has an abundance of talented entrepreneurs. However acquiring funding and a means to access markets, partners and legitimacy has been a challenge Japanese entrepreneurs have struggled with for years.
According to David Jansen, partner and author of PwC's Revitalising Corporate Japan report, "At this point in history, the Japanese people are very uncertain about what the future holds for them. In the last year, I have had the opportunity to meet innovative and energetic individuals who care deeply about how Japan continues to evolve after the events of March 11, 2011. This is why PwC wants to continue to work closely with Japanese business leaders, scholars and entrepreneurs to help connect today's leaders with tomorrow's visionaries."
Founded by entrepreneur and Intecur CEO William H. Saito, GEW is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to speak one-on-one with successful business owners as well as potentially procure funding from both domestic and foreign sources. "There has been a tendency in Japan to alienate entrepreneurial figures," says Saito, "since their approach to business is so unconventional in this culture that views risk and failure with extreme scepticism. We want the participants of the GEW to develop a better understanding of entrepreneurship and recognize its contribution to growth, innovation and social development."
Entrepreneurs featured at GEW include Japan-based grass-roots start-ups, such as "Rin to Emu" which specializes in fitness and rehabilitation facilities for victims of strokes and disease, as well as global companies, such as Google, as they seek innovative ways to tailor their products for new and existing markets.
"Perhaps the most important reason for holding events like GEW in Japan, and around the world, is to encourage and inspire individuals who even now are developing innovative products and different ways of thinking. Despite their best efforts, they will not succeed if there are no resources available to help grow and foster these ideas," said Jansen.
GEW will include panels and workshops covering a variety of issues, including challenges Japanese companies face when expanding overseas; women in the workforce; how Japanese companies are adapting to fulfill the needs of an ageing society; and supporting employees and businesses in Tohoku. Additionally, U.S. Ambassador John Roos and his wife Susan Roos will present the U.S. Ambassador's Award to the winner of the Tokyo Entrepreneurship Japan Elevator Pitch contest to be held on Tuesday, November 13th.
