JAKARTA, INDONESIA, Apr 12, 2013 - (ACN Newswire) - IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, engaged with developers, suppliers, government officials and financiers at a green expo to support green building development in Indonesia that aims to improve energy and water efficiency in buildings.
The Greenright Expo and Conference, held April 10 - 13, 2013, marked the launch of the Jakarta Green Building Code, which was passed a year ago. The expo was organized by the Green Building Council Indonesia, a nongovernmental and not-for-profit organization committed to the development of green buildings in Indonesia.
At the expo, industry players, government officials and academics discussed green building policies, regulatory instruments, incentives and financial schemes for motivating the building industry to adopt the code, and the possibility of introducing green buildings into the curricula of Indonesian universities.
"Commercial buildings of certain sizes will have to comply with the green building criteria stipulated in the code," said Ir. I Putu Ngurah Indiana, head of the Jakarta Building Authority (Dinas Pengawasan dan Penertiban Bangunan Provinsi DKI Jakarta). "This includes buildings such as offices, malls and apartments that are bigger than 50,000 square meters, hotels and health facilities that are bigger than 20,000 square meters and educational facilities that are bigger than 10,000 square meters."
IFC shared with the participants success stories from countries that are more advanced in implementing green building policies, including Australia, Singapore, and South Korea. IFC also presented online tools and user-friendly guides to help building evaluators, owners and professionals to better understand the new code.
"Investing in green buildings is not only essential for a sustainable future, but also makes smart business sense," said Sarvesh Suri, IFC's country manager for Indonesia. "IFC is working globally to help reposition the building industry with a new focus on sustainability and energy efficiency. This event provides a very good opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the public and private sectors in implementing the green building development in Indonesia."
The Jakarta Green Building Code will take effect at the end of April and will be integrated into the application process for building permits. The code will set energy- and water-efficiency requirements for building design, which aims to reduce emissions and waste in order to alleviate climate change impact.
IFC advised the Indonesian government on developing green-building instruments that set energy- and water-efficiency requirements for large commercial and high-rise residential buildings in the cities. This expo and conference aimed to provide networking opportunities and help identify potential collaborations among the key stakeholders.
