Bandung, W Java, Indonesia, June 15, 2013 - (ACN Newswire) - Bio Farma has been entrusted with hosting the 2nd meeting of medicine and vaccine producing countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Bio Farma corporate secretary M. Rustan Rahman said on Saturday that the meeting of producers of medicine and vaccine manufacturers from the Islamic countries will take place from 16 to 19 June, 2013 in Bandung, West Java.
According to Rahman, Indonesia's decision to host the meeting is a follow up to the decision of the meeting of Islamic Countries' Advisory Group in Ankara Turkey and the 6th meeting of the OIC Steering Committee on Health in Jakarta.
In addition, the Indonesian government through the letter of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Health to the OIC Secretary General has also expressed willingness to host a meeting to finalize the implementation plan for Strategic Health Action Programme 2013-2022.
Bio Farma itself is Indonesia's only vaccine manufacturer whose some of its products have been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) so that the company can already supply its products to other countries.
Among Islamic countries, only Indonesia, in this case Bio Farma, has been pre-qualified by WHO for some of the products. Bio Farma has been producing and supplying vaccines for immunization programs in a number of countries, including in Islamic countries.
Bio Farma's capabilities in vaccine self-reliance has been made a reference or taken as an example by vaccine manufacturers in Islamic countries so that the state-owned company is requested to host the 2nd meeting of Vaccine- and Medicine-Producers of Islamic countries.
Bio Farma will also become a resource party in the Workshop on Vaccine Manufacturers to be held alongside the meeting, slated for 16 June 2013.
The Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food and Control (BPOM) is also to hold a workshop on Indonesia's and other Islamic countries' experience in strengthening the functions of their drug and food control agencies in vaccine production for global markets, on 17 June 2013 in the same venue.
For the shorter term period, Bio Farma wishes to strengthen the cooperation among Islamic countries in vaccine production self-reliance while for the medium term it wants to jointly develop new vaccines which are needed by Islamic countries.
Bio Farma is the only vaccine and antisera producer for humans in Indonesia. Currently, the needs for EPI vaccines in Indonesia have been supplied solely by Bio Farma by manufacturing and distributing more than 1.7 billion doses of vaccine per year to meet the needs of EPI vaccine for the national immunization program.
