JAKARTA, INDONESIA, Oct 17, 2013 - (ACN Newswire) - Transactions on the first day of Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) 2013, totalling US$ 13.33 million, featured textiles and furniture, with spices, handicrafts, jewellery and accessories, footwear and agricultural products following. While based on country, most buyers making transactions on the first day came from Saudi Arabia, the United States, Nigeria, India, Egypt, and South Korea.
"Trade Delegations present at TEI 2013 were interested in various products shown in the total. In addition to handicrafts and furniture, products shown in TEI 2013 are more diverse," said Deputy Trade Minister Wamendag Bayu Krisnamurthi in a news conference on day 2 of TEI 2013. "We are expecting a significant surge in transactions on day 2, considering that the new Business Matching activity begins and continues through the final day," he added.
Downstream export products displayed in the National Export Development (NED) Pavilion represent various industry sectors divided into several zones, ranging from strategic industry products, natural resource-based products, product manufacturing, the creative industries and SME products, to potential investment and professional service sectors.
NED is a showcase pavilion which demonstrates that Indonesia is able to create products that rely not only on natural resources, but those that are supported by high technology, innovation, and creativity, the trademark of younger Indonesian professional workers. For example, PT. Biopharma, which produces high-quality vaccines and antiserums in Indonesia, has been exporting vaccine products worldwide.
"This is in line with the Government's efforts to continue to increase the added value of Indonesian exports so that Indonesia's export commodities can become a trigger price in the international market," said Deputy Minister of Trade.
The first day saw the Deputy Trade Minister paying courtesy calls and meeting with trade mission delegations from several countries including the United Arab Emirates, Suriname, Serbia, Malaysia, Sudan and Jordan. Increased cooperation in in the fields of economy and trade became important notes in meetings with the delegations. "In addition to discussing improvement of bilateral relations in the economic field, the courtesy calls were intended to explore export opportunities, and expand business networking and investment opportunities," said the Deputy Minister.
The main focus of TEI 2013 is developing long-term Business-to-Business (B-to-B) opportunities. "Actual transactions that occurred totalled USD 13.33 million. We are optimistic that our final transaction target will be achieved. Many participants also expressed that an assessment during the expo will be followed up by a company visit to ensure their requests will be met before buying. Plans on day 2 include the completion of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Solaris Paper Plt. Ltd. and PT Pindo Deli Pulp and Paper Mills, worth EUR 16 million," explained Wamendag.
In addition to increasing the role of trade, TEI 2013 is also an ideal opportunity to attract foreign investors to Indonesia. The Trade and Investment Forum at the Expo, held in cooperation with the Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), will be attended by around 600 participants businessmen, exporters, importers, investors and potential investors, as well as Indonesian representatives from abroad. The activities are expected to provide a positive image of the condition of the economy and the investment climate in Indonesia.
The Trade and Investment Forum held parallel discussions, divided into seven regional groups including Asia (non-ASEAN), Middle East and Africa, Europe 1, Europe 2, North, Central and South America, as well as ASEAN and Australia-New Zealand. Speakers at the discussion included Ambassadors and trade attaches to the Indonesian Trade Promotion Center who sought to convey information to businessmen in Indonesia regarding the opportunities, strategies, and regulations of export destinations worldwide.
Along with staging TEI 2013, the Ministry of Trade in collaboration with Femina Group is hosting Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW) 2014 at Senayan City, to facilitate Business-to-Business entry for entrepreneurs in the fashion field with international buyers. TEI and JFW both encourage increased non-oil exports, especially in the creative field of fashion and design.
