Marjon Bloemkolk of Studio Piet Boon, an architecture and interior design firm at the marcus evans Asian Infrastructure & Property Development Summit 2014, on delivering enthralling designs. |
LONDON, Oct 7, 2014 - (ACN Newswire) - Piet Boon's design philosophy has been shaped over many years of experience across the world, with projects from New York to Tokyo and from Paris to Antigua. "Each time, getting it right is a matter of balancing the elements of functionality, aesthetics, individuality and local character, until they all fit together like a glove," says Marjon Bloemkolk, Head of Marketing, Piet Boon(R).
Piet Boon(R) is an architecture and interior design firm at the marcus evans Asian Infrastructure & Property Development Summit 2014, in Kuala Lumpur, 13 - 14 October.
- The Jane in Antwerp has become a city landmark. What was the concept behind this unique restaurant you designed and what valuable lessons could you share with hoteliers and property developers in Asia?
The idea was to transform the chapel of a former military hospital into a high-end, contemporary restaurant with international allure where experience is key. That is why we approached The Jane not purely as a restaurant but as a total concept, where the atmosphere is created through a combination of the character of the environment, the design within it, the food and the team. To Sergio Herman, food is like religion and we were able to translate this into the design, for example by building the kitchen where the former altar was, giving it the "sacred" position that it deserves in the eyes of a gifted chef like him. It is crucial that each project has its one of a kind design story.
- How do you combine the elements of functionality, aesthetics, individuality and local character? Why do your designs speak to people from all over the world?
Successfully blending functionality and aesthetics will deliver a good design, but we are not satisfied with just that. An outstanding design, at the quality level we aim for, does not just work well and look good, it most importantly also feels good. That is where individuality and local environment come in. We believe design should positively impact the wellbeing of our clients - and their clients. Creating the sense of belonging in our designs is a matter of deep-diving into their personality, culture and lifestyle. Recognisably conveying our principles but breathing their individuality. The concepts always honour the type of landscape they are situated in. We choose locally sourced durable materials and work with the natural elements where possible.
- What are the benefits of the "total concept" approach? What gets overlooked when architecture and interior design are done separately?
The main benefit clearly is that one creative vision, one design conviction drives the design concept and moreover its execution. It also enables us to fully control a successful collaboration between architecture, interior, product and styling at the top quality level we strive for. The disciplines do not stand alone; architecture influences interior, which influences styling, and so on. This makes it crucial that they are in tune with each other and that is simply easier to achieve when you have creative supervision over all of them. It is especially beneficial on the execution level.
- What are the key elements of a truly timeless design?
Truly timeless design is not affected by the whims of the marketplace or the ever-changing and evolving design trends. Its principles are pure and understated, effortlessly accommodating lifestyle changes that every design faces over the years. Making optimum use of space and natural elements, creating clear sightlines and adding symmetry to the concept enables us to get the basics right, making a design forever relevant and fit to withstand the test of time.
- What are the latest trends that this sector in Asia should prepare for? How?
Branded development is gaining popularity globally. People with a demanding lifestyle and middle-to-high income work hard and play hard at the same time. They want comfortable luxury for their homes, offices and travels. More importantly they want unique experiences, look for products and brands with a story, with authenticity and character. They also look for a sense of place. To see culture and environment represented in a property is important to them.
We see this happening in the hospitality industry as well. Travellers do not want a cookie-cutter approach; they want brands to tell location-specific stories.
We have seen the success of our branded projects in New York where we experienced firsthand how powerful branding a property can be. Branding makes a project stand out, especially in the densely populated cities. We are convinced this is a key success factor in Asia too.
