Overall Winner to Visit H&M's Sweden Headquarters |
HONG KONG, Jan 21, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - The Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers' Contest 2015 awards ceremony took place yesterday (20 Jan), with Michelle Yeung from the Party & Evening-Wear Group named Overall Winner. She received a cash prize and a one-month study trip to Sweden's fashion institute, including a visit to H&M's headquarters in Sweden. The winners of the 39th Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers' Contest 2015 are:

Overall Winner: Michelle Yeung: "Inside the Caves" Party & Evening-Wear Group Winner: Kevin Ho: "The Crossing" Contemporary Day-Wear Group Winner: Necro Poon: "Self-Salvation Oath" Best Accessories Design Award: Tsang Fan-yu: "YON"
Ms Yeung said her winning design was inspired by a trip to the United States, during which she saw rocks of different shapes and colours while visiting a museum. Her pieces take reference from oft-overlooked beauty found in nature and, in particular, the interiors of caves. Her show-stopping cocktail dress featured hundreds of hand-stitched beads densely placed to appear like a cascade of crystallised rock, an effect that took the designer a year to achieve. "Every designer dreams to have their own brand in their lifetime. If opportunity allows, I wish to establish my own brand," Ms Yeung said.
International Panel
The judging panel included industry experts, media representatives and local and overseas designers. H&M Creative Advisor Margareta van den Bosch was the VIP judge. Shirley Chan, Chairman, HKTDC Garment Advisory Committee, was Chief Judge. Joining them were Gaku Mizoguchi, representative of Parco Co Ltd in Japan; local designer Lu Lu Cheung; Deborah Cheng, Vice President, Marketing & International Business, I.T Ltd; fashion stylist and image consultant Grace Lam and Gloria Lam, Editor-in-Chief of Elle Magazine.
Creativity and originality, market potential, workmanship, use of fabrics and overall visual appeal were the main judging criteria. A new Best Accessories Design Award is added this year under the sponsorship of I.T Ltd to recognise excellence in the design of footwear and accessories.
Ms van den Bosch praised the overall performance and said she could see a lot of talent displayed in the design for each of the groups. She added that design is all about working as a team and advised young designers to collaborate with more people and accumulate more practical experience.
Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers' Contest has discovered many talented designers over the years, including Seth Yeung, Matt Hui and Nelson Leung, who showcased their new fashion pieces after the competition. The Young Fashion Designers' Contest is one of the highlights of HKTDC World Boutique, Hong Kong, and HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter. The two concurrent events, organised by the HKTDC, continue through 22 January.
