HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau said: "We saw vibrant trading and networking on the fairground and observed that buyers were interested in green lighting products, such as LEDs, as well as smart lighting fixtures." The HKTDC commissioned an independent survey agency to conduct onsite surveys, interviewing buyers and exhibitors about their views on market prospects.
"According to the preliminary results, over 85 per cent of buyers and exhibitors expect overall sales to improve or remain the same next year," Mr Chau said. "The industry is generally optimistic about the prospects of LED lighting products and expects several LED applications to lead growth in areas including Indoor Lighting (Household, Commercial use), Outdoor Lighting and Smart Lighting Systems."
LED Leads
As all three of Hong Kong's major export markets for lighting products; the United States, the European Union and the Chinese mainland, have banned or plan to ban incandescent light bulbs, market demand for green lighting products is on the rise. At the Lighting Fair (Spring Edition), a number of brands and manufacturers offered an array of trendy LED lighting products that are attractive to buyers from different markets.
Hong Kong exhibitor Matrix Holdings Limited specialises in energy-efficient LED light bulbs under the Viribright brand. The company has been attending both the Spring and Autumn editions of the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair since 2009. This year, the company showcased its latest LED technology and high performance LED light bulbs at the fair, which attracted the attention and interest of many buyers. Dor Cheng, the company's President, considered the Lighting Fair an effective platform to promote the brand, showcase products and connect with buyers. He said he has already met new buyers from Australia, Europe and the US.
Smart Lighting
Another Hong Kong exhibitor, Mipow Limited, manufactures mobile device accessories. The company started producing the PLAYBULB(TM) smart lighting series last year and launched several new models earlier this year, including speaker lights bulbs, candle lights and garden lamps. As a first time exhibitor, Mipow Limited wanted to introduce its smart lighting products for both personal and commercial use. Sunny Ng, Mipow's Global Marketing Director, said: "We have turned our booth into a bar, attracting a lot of buyers to experience the products' lighting effects. During three hours on the first day of the fair, we received some 300 enquiries from buyers from Europe, the Middle East and the US."
At the debut World of Professional & Industrial Lighting zone, Xiao Zhichao, Business Manager of Hong Kong's Luxtronik Technology Company Limited, which specialises in LED floodlights, said his company was participating in the Lighting Fair (Spring Edition) for the fifth time. Mr Xiao said they received more enquiries from quality buyers than last year, and he was satisfied with the traffic. He said the fair had helped his company meet new overseas buyers and promote new products.
Overseas Buyers Active
Haji Commercial Company (LLC) is a wholesaler and distributor of lighting products for commercial, outdoor, industrial and architectural applications in the UAE and is an agent for renowned European and US brands. The company visited the Lighting Fair for the second time. Unni Krishnan, Haji's General Manager of UAE & Qatar, said: "We are going to launch our own brand by June this year, so we have come here to look for quality suppliers of LED lamps, panels and stripes. On the first morning of the fair, we had already met many high-quality suppliers from the Chinese mainland. We will visit their factories in May and finalise our orders."
Wipro Consumer Care & Lighting is the second largest supplier of office lighting in India. The company provides office lighting, commercial lighting, industrial lighting and street lighting to a wide range of projects. Rajesh Sangewar, Wipro's Head of Product Design, was visiting the Spring Lighting Fair for the first time. He said he had shortlisted three or four potential suppliers and planned to finalise the orders on-site. Apart from sourcing quality products, Mr Sangewar was also happy to see the HKTDC nurturing design talents by organising the Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition.
