Suvro Ghosh of ClinZen LLC, a service provider at the marcus evans Evolution Summit 2015, on improving clinical trial success. |
NEW YORK, N.Y., May 1, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - "There is no comprehensive solution for managing clinical trials," says Suvro Ghosh, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, ClinZen LLC. "Most clinical trial management systems are geared towards a specific type of specialty, and are not platform independent or fully mobile. The next generation clinical trial tool set will need to combine existing techniques and focus more on efficiency," he adds.
ClinZen LLC is a service provider at the marcus evans Evolution Summit 2015, in Palm Beach, Florida, May 6-8.
- What are some of the gaps in clinical trial management systems? What are the unmet needs?
The biggest gap is the lack of a comprehensive solution. So much can depend on the disease type, whether it is diabetes or cancer, that most software solutions in the market are not specialty agnostic. Our goal was to solve that problem, so that clinical trials could be flexible and bend to the desired direction.
Another area I would say are quality of CRO services which are not where they should be. We have made it easy to formulate the study and trial design and made consulting services in the core domain as a necessity rather than a choice.
- What is the next generation clinical trial tool set?
The next generation clinical trial tool set is not anything we have not seen before, but a combination of already existing techniques to create something that will lead to more favorable outcomes for the drug companies and participants. The combination of cloud and mobility on the same platform will make the next generation product. And addition of Big Data on the Cloud Platform within an extremely high speed perimeter would create a sea change in Analytics. With this architecture, it would become possible to run millions of error checks on thousands of documents and display visualizations on a dashboard in few minutes. The platform we have created allows this and more.
We are trying to modify the mindset of the industry, but also bring about change using mobile technology, and in doing so make it platform independent and easier for people to interact. User-friendliness is very important today, and cloud computing makes a lot more possible. Yet there is no enterprise class clinical trial system that is entirely mobile. Most have implemented some mobility features, but there is nothing that is all encompassing.
- How could such features impact the outcome of clinical trials, reduce costs and time to market?
Point of care is a simple example. Previously, a physician would visit the trial participant and make some notes two hours later on an electronic health record system. That difference in time made a big difference in the quality of what they wrote down.
With point of care on a mobile device, the data can be fed through a clinical trial portal, and preventive measures taken when needed. There is a good case to be made for mobility. When we talk about efficiency, it was always about getting the drug to market sooner or saving money.
Simply implementing clinical data interchange standards already halves the time that a clinical trial takes, so in combination with mobility, the system would be more efficient for the short and long term. It reduces the number of people needed and amount of complexity, which all impacts the bottom line. In addition, we should think of the cancer patient who has to wait three months for a drug. He may get his life back if the drug comes out sooner.
Focusing on efficiency, rather than on getting the drug cleared by the FDA, would lead to more trials and better drugs.
