Indonesia's Energy Minister Optimistic about Reaching Target in Electricity Program

JAKARTA, Aug 14, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Sudirman Said expressed optimism to reach the development target of the electricity target. The government has set targets to build new power plants until 2019 with a total capacity of 35,000 megawatts. "See the progress made in preparations, we are optimistic. The challenge is only in land clearing and licensing," the minister said.

The minister made the statement following criticism by the Coordinating Minister of the Maritime Affairs Rizal Ramli, who suggested review of the target to build new power plants with a total capacity of 35,000 MW in five years. Sudirman said this year realization already began of power purchase agreements (PPA) signed for 10,000 MW with the national power utility PT PLN.

"Next year, hopefully more agreements would be signed for 15,000 MW." Sudirman also said around 20 percent of the target had been constructed, giving optimism that the target would be achieved, but evaluation would also continue. "Evaluation is not intended to cut the target but how to reach the target sooner," he said.

He said the target of 45,000 MW is set based on requirement which is also set based on study. The remaining target of 7,000 MW carried over from the previous government is now 50 percent completed, he said.

Earlier Rizal Ramli said that it would be difficult to reach the 35,000 MW target in 2019 especially with the carry over of 7,000 MW from the previous government. Rizal said he would ask Sudirman and the National Energy Council to evaluate the program set by President Joko Widodo.

"I will ask ESDM minister and DEN to make reevaluation of the target to be realistic. Don't set too high target that would be too difficult to achieve," the new coordination minister said. --Antara.
