Traditional Bamboo Scaffolding Craftsmanship Re-interpreted |
HONG KONG, Oct 20, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - The blend of engineering and mechanics in bamboo scaffolding is a craft unique to Hong Kong. In collaboration with several Hong Kong designers working in different disciplines, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will present a "CREATE OUTSIDE THE GRID" exhibition of innovative lifestyle items crafted from reclaimed scaffolding bamboo and lamp wood. The exhibit will feature at the "Gallery by the Harbour" from 22 October to 8 November, giving the public the chance to appreciate these outstanding works by local designers up close.
| HKTDC to Present "Create Outside the Grid" Exhibition |
The heydays of the local bamboo scaffolding industry were in the 1960s and 1970s, when Hong Kong's economy was taking off. Despite their traditional roots, these well-structured and orderly bamboo scaffoldings still dot the city's landscape, representing Hong Kong's flexibility and innovative spirit. The design crossover exhibition "CREATE OUTSIDE THE GRID," uses the bamboo scaffolding technique shaping the "GRID" to represent the uniqueness and excellence of Hong Kong designs. In the current collaboration with the HKTDC, 29 highly talented award-winning local designers and artists impart new vigour and contemporary value into reclaimed scaffolding bamboo and abandoned lamp wood by transforming them into furniture, household items, fashion accessories and works of art through the infusion of creative, environmental and business elements. Moving from the urban construction projects enclosed "within the grids" of bamboo scaffoldings to the innovative spirit of Hong Kong thriving "outside the grid", these designers use their imagination to re-interpret a traditional craft and present new forms of beauty built on the diversity and vitality of local culture.
By collaborating with "Gallery by the Harbour" for the first time in hosting the "CREATE OUTSIDE THE GRID" exhibition, the HKTDC will give the public more exposure to Hong Kong's outstanding original designs. This will help encourage innovative thought at the local level while also previewing December's upcoming InnoDesignTech Expo ("IDT Expo") to the public.
The IDT Expo will promote the exchange of creative technology knowledge by showcasing the latest designs and innovative technological concepts and products from around the world. Organised by the HKTDC, it will be staged at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 3-5 December. The Expo will be divided into two sections: the "Trade Hall" and the "Inspiration Hall." The Trade Hall features various business solutions that are based on innovative designs and technologies and designed to help companies boost their productivity and competitiveness. These solutions cover branding strategies, new media marketing, green technologies and eco-friendly solutions and other innovative areas. The Inspiration Hall brings together the works of top designers from Hong Kong and the rest of the world, showcasing new ideas and experiences through various art creations and its design education zone. This year, Barcelona, the "European Capital of Innovation," has been invited as Partner City of IDT Expo to showcase its contributions to urban design and technology. The IDT Expo is open to the public free of charge.
