Indonesia and Italy to Develop Maritime Cooperation

JAKARTA, Nov 9, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Rizal Ramli met Italian Minister of Economic Development Federica Guidi on Monday to discuss bilateral relations, especially in the maritime sector.

"Indonesia has a long history of relations with Italy. Several Indonesians buy Italian goods, such as machinery, food, and fashion. I think an opportunity still exists to improve business cooperation," Ramli stated here on Monday.

The opportunity can be explored to develop maritime and fisheries cooperation.

"Indonesia is still facing problems related to illegal fishing. We need technology to monitor illegal fishing. Italy has in-depth experience and advanced technology in the maritime sector," he pointed out.

In addition, Indonesia is developing the fish processing industry outside Java Island to provide value add and to boost the economy.

"The fish processing technology from Italy is among the best being used in Indonesia," the minister said.

In line with infrastructure development, he noted that the Indonesian government is keen to increase cooperation with its Italian counterpart.

"The cooperation is expected to develop eastern Indonesia. We will build more than 500 ships next year. We will invite the Italian government to cooperate with the national shipbuilding industry," he affirmed.

On the occasion, Guidi remarked that the Italian government has the technology, expertise, and experience in key sectors that have become the main focus of the current government.

"I want to ensure that these sectors are also crucial for Italy," he added. -- Antara.
