Fujitsu Group Malaysia Eco-Forest Park Certified as a Forest Reserve by Sabah, Malaysia

TOKYO, Dec 20, 2016 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu today announced that the state legislature of Sabah, Malaysia, has certified as a forest reserve the Fujitsu Group Malaysia Eco-Forest Park, located in the Kinarut region of Sabah. The Fujitsu Group established the Eco-Forest Park in 2002, and with the goal of regenerating Malaysia's tropical rainforests it has planted local species and carried out conservation activities.

Now the Fujitsu Group's many years of activities to conserve biological diversity have borne fruit with this certification by the state legislative assembly of Sabah.

In Sabah, Malaysia, areas that are to be permanently managed as forest land are certified as forest reserves, which are divided into seven classes, depending on their function. Now the Eco-Forest Park, located in the Kinarut area of Sabah, as well as the surrounding areas (about 320 hectares), have been certified as the "SAFODA(1) Kinarut Forest Reserve Class IV." Class IV is for forests reserved for recreation, educational, and research use. This certification clearly demonstrates that the Eco-Forest Park is to be used as a place of research and environmental learning about forest conservation, as well as a place of public recreation.

About Fujitsu's Tropical Rainforest Regeneration Activities

As part of an effort to conserve biological diversity, the Fujitsu Group has been working with the Sabah Forestry Development Authority (SAFODA) to regenerate the tropical rainforest in the Eco-Forest Park since 2002. These activities include the planting of 37,500 saplings of native species across about 150 hectares in order to regenerate the original tropical rainforest of a secondary forest where invasive species had grown up, as well as the maintenance necessary for the saplings to grow. In addition, the Eco-Forest Park is being used as a place for environmental education, where Fujitsu Group employees get hands-on experience by participating in eco-tours to deepen their understanding of the current state of tropical rainforests and the issues facing them. Altogether, over 2,000 people have participated in these activities up to this point, including Fujitsu Group employees and their families, as well as local students.

The Fujitsu Group will continue its efforts to contribute to society in the environmental field, in order to leave a beautiful global environment for the next generation.
