Habitat for Humanity Philippines Launches Appeal to Assist Those Affected by Typhoon Nesat

SINGAPORE, Sept 29, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - Habitat for Humanity Philippines has launched an appeal to assist thousands of families devastated by Typhoon Nesat. Nesat, (called Pedring in the Philippines) struck Luzon, Philippines' largest island, on Tuesday (27 September), killing more than 30 people and affecting around 500,000.

Habitat for Humanity Philippines is appealing for funds, donations of goods and volunteers to support families in Navotas City in Metro Manila, and the Bicol region of Luzon.

Ricky Jacinto, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity Philippines, said: "Habitat for Humanity Philippines will be providing shelter kits, containing items like plywood, corrugated iron sheeting, and nails to families whose homes have been damaged by Typhoon Nesat. Additionally, we will be distributing cleaning kits and care kits, including non-food items like blankets, soap, brooms and disinfectant, to assist in the clean-up operation. Please donate money or goods to help Habitat for Humanity Philippines reach more people."

To donate, please visit habitat.org.ph or ring +632 490 6122 or +632 846 2177

More than 6,000 homes have been damaged across Luzon, and over 150,000 people are living in evacuation centers. In addition to the 35 people killed, 34 have been injured and 45 people are still missing .

Typhoon Nesat worked its way across the island of Luzon, home to more than half the Philippine population, and is now heading towards China and Vietnam. Both Habitat for Humanity China and Habitat for Humanity Vietnam are tracking its progress very closely.

Nesat struck almost exactly two years after Typhoon Ketsana that killed more than 700 people. Following Ketsana, Habitat for Humanity Philippines supported 5,000 affected families.
