Habitat for Humanity Launches Appeal to Assist Those Affected by Tropical Storm Washi in the Philippines
- 10,000 families to be supported -

SINGAPORE, Dec 20, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - Habitat for Humanity has launched an appeal to assist thousands of families devastated by Tropical Storm Washi. Washi (called Sendong in the Philippines), swept across southern Philippines from 16 to 18 December, killing more than 950 people and destroying thousands of homes.

Habitat for Humanity is appealing for funds and donations of goods, or gifts-in-kind to support affected families.

Charlie Ayco, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity Philippines, said: "Thousands of homes have been destroyed and so providing people with shelter is an immediate need that must be addressed. We are conducting an assessment at the moment and expect to start operations soon. Please donate to Habitat for Humanity to help those affected."

Current government estimates are that more than 300,000 people have been affected - the majority in the worst affected cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in the Northern Mindanao region*. Figures are expected to rise as national authorities gather and consolidate additional information.

Habitat for Humanity Philippines is expecting to support more than 10,000 families through the distribution of emergency shelter and hygiene or clean-up kits, containing items like corrugated iron roofing, nails, brooms, buckets and disinfectant. Habitat Philippines will also deploy mobile units with construction tools, so affected communities can start repairing their homes.
