IUJ Students Travel to Two Cities in Vietnam for ASEAN Entrepreneurship Project

Niigata, Japan, May 8, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - Five MBA students at the International University of Japan (IUJ) in Niigata ( www.iuj.ac.jp ) are getting ready to fly to two cities in Vietnam (including Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi) to conduct an in-depth market research project for a Japanese company based in Thailand with an interest in expanding their operations into Vietnam. This project fits into the new central theme of the IUJ Business School Faculty in their quest to enable Executives and Business Students to effectively understand how to "Leverage Emerging Asia for Global Competitive Advantage."

IUJ Students Travel to Two Cities in Vietnam for ASEAN Entrepreneurship Project

In many courses throughout the curriculum students study effective business practices for emerging markets: practices which often differ from strategies effective in developed economies. Towards this end, 2012 saw the launch of an entirely new course in the MBA Curriculum specifically designed to implement this knowledge development is "Entrepreneurship Strategy for ASEAN Markets".

Prof. Takeru Ohe*, formerly a full-time Professor at the Waseda Business School, together with a venture capital in Niigata, found a retailer in Niigata City who was interested in sponsoring an IUJ Class project. This company is trying to expand their business in Vietnam and both Prof. Ohe and top executives from this company saw this as a perfect opportunity for IUJ MBA students to conduct market research and make real-world business proposals. The output of this field trip and analyses afterward will be presented to this retailing company as a strategic business proposal.

Dr. Philip Sugai, GSIM Dean commented, "This is an outstanding opportunity for our MBA students, who have had many classes focused on building their strategic management skills within this region and globally. Now with this project, they have a real-life opportunity to implement everything they have learned."

Students will travel to Vietnam on May 9th, and return to Japan one week later, where they will then work to finalize their proposals and present them to the management of the retailer.

* Prof. Ohe, Ph.D. in Experimental Physics from the University of Maryland, has vast experience as a consultant for companies competing in the high industries of the U.S., Europe and Japan, as well as an educator in entrepreneurship where he taught at Waseda Business School for 10+ years. He developed a COBLAS (Consulting based learning for ASEAN SMEs) program and BMO (Bruce Merrifield & Ohe) method, a tool to evaluate success of business opportunities.
