Investing Amidst the Eurozone Crisis
Trevor Williams, Chief Economist, Lloyds Bank Wholesale Markets, a speaker at the marcus evans Elite Summit 2012, highlights key investment opportunities that European family offices could look into.

London, May 9, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - However the global economy or Eurozone crisis pans out, the world is full of investment opportunities, says Trevor Williams, Chief Economist, at Lloyds Bank Wholesale. Family offices in Europe tend to focus on equity markets at home, but now is a good time to consider commodities and emerging markets, he adds.

A speaker at the upcoming marcus evans Elite Summit 2012, in Montreux, Switzerland, 30 May - 1 June, Williams gives us his predictions for the global economy, and which assets private wealth managers in Europe could consider relatively safe from its pitfalls.

- What are your predictions for the Eurozone crisis?

Resolution can only take two forms: the countries with stronger balance sheets transferring some of their budgets to the weaker countries (as is happening for Greece) or the weak countries exiting the euro until they restore their competitiveness. European countries have to be competitive against each other in terms of labour market or accept that fiscal transfers are here to stay. For Greece and Portugal to stay within the euro, they will have to have a continued level of domestic austerity measures, which is difficult to maintain. However, if either leaves the euro, that would present investors with inexpensive assets.

- Amidst the Eurozone crisis, what should private wealth managers make sure not to overlook?

They overlook the opportunities in the wider world, to the high growth economies that are joining the global economy. Their investment pools are not seen as having an acceptable level of risk, but if you look at the risk profiles of some of the advanced countries, they have greater risks. Investors should consider the emerging markets fuelling the global economy, from Asia to Africa, Latin America to the Middle East.

- What is your opinion about commodities?

Commodities as an investment class are here to stay. They are in demand and are likely to remain so. Investors can look at the big commodity producers in the world, including food manufacturers in Argentina and Brazil. Also, mineral producers and exporters. Africa currently has the biggest store of minerals than anywhere else in the world.

- How will the US Presidential elections impact Europe?

The US economy is showing signs of recovery, driven by the productivity performance of its manufacturing base and a strengthening of its financial sector. The elections are clearly a negative for now, but they are not and will not prevent economic recovery. Once the Presidential and Congressional elections are over later this year, I expect there to be a wide reaching and ranging series of fiscal reforms that will put the US in a sounder footing for the years to come.

A strong US economy will contribute towards a stronger global economy, and give the European export markets a boost, as the US is still one of the largest importers in the world.

- Any final words?

The world is full of risks, but also opportunities for the bold. It is sometimes easy to forget that this is one of the greatest periods of wealth generation humanity has ever seen in history.
