Steering System Provides Superior Handling and Performance Characteristics |
HONG KONG, Jan 21, 2014 - (ACN Newswire) - Nexteer Automotive (Stock Code: 01316.HK), a tier one automotive supplier committed exclusively to wheel-to-wheel advanced steering and driveline systems, today announced it will supply the BMW i3 with its single-pinion, electric power steering (EPS) system. This system features Nexteer's new industry-leading electronic architecture capturing opportunities of industry conversion to EPS.
Nexteer's EPS growth is in line with the industry's conversion from hydraulic power steering (HPS) to EPS, as electric vehicle transmission efficiency contributes to improved performance, range and battery life. "BMW is known around the world as the 'Ultimate Driving Machine,' and our advanced steering systems deliver the performance and steering characteristics that BMW customers demand," said Laurent Bresson, president and global chief operating officer at Nexteer. "Nexteer's EPS systems are becoming the steering system of choice for global automakers as they deliver premium performance capabilities and functional safety features that allow them to meet specific market and customer demands."
Nexteer has signed an OEM agreement for the duration of BMW's i3 EV program. Nexteer's unique EPS system is ideal for EV applications. Its high-efficiency systems integration and low standby electrical demand set the standard in the industry for a vehicle's steering system energy consumption. Additionally, due to the company's rich automotive history and vehicle systems expertise, Nexteer's engineers take a total vehicle approach when designing and integrating steering systems. This approach allows Nexteer to deliver not just an industry-leading steering system, but one that is fully-integrated into the vehicles' electronic architecture, allowing Nexteer to quickly tune the steering to meet customer design iterations and steering requirements.
A key factor in Nexteer's ability to design, engineer and manufacture such complex and highly tunable steering systems is its fully integrated electronic systems design and software development center. The capability is a unique industry advantage, allowing for delivery of complex steering functions based on precise electronic control of the motor and its diagnostics that improve the driving experience and overall vehicle performance.
Nexteer's single-pinion EPS system is also featured on the 2014 Mini Cooper that made its North American debut during the LA Auto Show in November.
A pioneer in steering technologies, Nexteer was the first company to introduce EPS for volume applications in 1999.
